Text Structure: Movie Scripts
Nelly Tincheva · 2012
The structure of whole texts is, arguably, one of the first objects of (pre-) linguistic analysis. Even the earliest forms of Rhetoric explorations focused on it. But what is text structure in reality? How can it be explained from a cognitive standpoint? How does it exist as a human mental phenomenon?Taking a mental operations and simulation perspective, the present paper offers a typology of text structure(s). It seeks confirmation for the hypothesized types of text structure within the latest cognition-based studies. The examples provided come from the text-type of film scripts, and, more precisely, the scripts of the first two seasons of the BBC’s Sherlock series.
