An Introduction to Teletraffic

Malek Benslama, Wassila Kiamouche, Hadj Batatia · 2015

This chapter describes the aspects of queuing theory that are fundamental for classic teletraffic theory. It first discusses the history of teletraffic and queuing theory, which are the foundations of the teletraffic technique. A rapid evolution in queuing theory followed and the theory was subsequently applied to evaluating the performance of information and communication systems. Due to various pieces of research, queuing theory is widely used today and has countless applications. The chapter then explains the basic concepts of teletraffic theory: essentially birth-death processes and the Poisson process. The essential concept behind the teletraffic technique is that it is stochastic; the mathematics used henceforth will thus be probabilities, statistics and stochastic processes. These mathematical processes are summarized before they are applied to develop basic teletraffic theory. Finally, the chapter presents some teletraffic models.
