WLANs: The Physical Layer

Aftab Ahmad · 2005

This chapter follows from Chapter 3 on wireless LAN components and discusses the physical layer of some important WLAN standards, namely IEEE 802.11 and ETSI's HIPERLAN. Even though IEEE 802.11 has come out as far more popular than any other standard, the HIPERLAN is a part of an important suite of limited range high-speed networks suite to be used for broadband access (together called broadband radio access networks or BRAN). It also reflects the course taken by ETSI. When describing IEEE 802.11 PHY, a discussion is included for all currently available extensions, that is, 802.11, 802.11b, 802.11g, 802.11a. Since OFDM and CCK are introduced in these later extensions of IEEE 802.11 suite of standards, a heuristic discussion on these two modulation types in included. References are included at the end of chapter.
