Interface Design and User Problems and Errors: A Case Study of Novice Searchers.

This article identifies and categorizes problems novice searchers encountered in a database-searching task with a CD-ROM product. The methodology incorporates three procedures to collect data: participant observation, self administered questionnaires, and selective interviewing. System-use errors and inefficiencies are defined, excluding typographical errors. A taxonomy for analysis and classifi cation of user problems is proposed. Recommendations for improvement in the design of systems and training pro grams are also discussed.
