This paper explores what has transpired in the world of standards, specifically dealing with the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) standard, P1209. This standard (currently in draft form) is concerned with the evaluation and selection of Computer Aided Software Engineering (CASE) tools. The formal title of the standard is The Recommended Practice for the Evaluation and Selection of CASE Tools. Additionally, a brief CASE tool philosophy is presented as introductory material and background information for this standard. The reasoning behind the ancillary information is to put CASE tools in their proper perspective within the software development and maintenance life cycles.
