Computer-assisted diagnosis has the potential to help physicians in activities such as cancer screening. Such systems have been researched since the 1960s, but how have they changed over time? This paper reviews 138 studies of CAD in diagnostic imaging for cancer published from 1992 to 2010 and discusses the various changes in usage and results over this period. Specificity of CAD has significantly improved over time, probably due to research focused on reducing false positives, but sensitivity has not changed. This may be a result of improved study quality since 1992 or the evolving aims of CAD systems, which not only detect lesions in images, but now also attempt to classify and diagnose them. © 2010 IADIS.
