To illustrate the kind of behavior a generic AIS architecture must support, let us consider the task of monitoring patients in a surgical intensive-care unit (SICU). Surgical intensive-care patients are critically ill individuals who require lifesupport devices, such as respirators or dialysis machines, to perform some of their vital functions (see Figure 11.1). These devices also measure certain physi ological parameters. For example, parameters measured by the respirator include the tidal volume of air inhaled by the patient on each breath and the peak inspiratory pressure.
