Ontology of SCOR for the Strategic Alignment of Organizations and Information Systems

Pierre‐Alain Millet, Lorraine Trilling, Thierry Moyaux, Omar Sakka · 2013

Inter-organizational alignment between business and information systems (IS) at strategic and operational level is a key performance factor of supply chains (SCs). The purpose of this chapter is to study the impact of ontologies on the alignment between inter-organizational IS and business practices, that is, how the transmission of information in ontologies facilitates collaboration in an SC. This is a key challenge for knowledge interoperability. The chapter uses the Web ontology language (OWL) proposed by the semantic Web community to study how ontologies may support inter-organizational collaboration. The chapter proposes to create an OWL ontology of the supply chain operations reference (SCOR) model delivered by the SC Council. It explores the advantages of ontologies in inter-organizational IS. The chapter explains how OWL ontology of SCOR is obtained. It then discusses the impacts of the approach on the strategic alignment of organizations. The chapter concludes proposing some future research tracks. Controlled Vocabulary Terms SCOR model; Strategic alignment; Supply chain management; Web based performance management
