Smart Devices, Systems and Intelligent Environments
Joaquín Entrialgo, Mohammad S. Obaidat · 2011
This chapter introduces smart devices and systems, and then intelligent environments. It presents the trends, limitations and challenges for these technologies. The chapter provides several examples of application as well as case studies that illustrates the capabilities that they can offer. It presents a broad vision that has been chosen and any object that can exhibit smart capabilities is called a smart device. This chapter analyzes the main components of smart devices (processing, memory, communication, sensing and actuating) and has proposed a taxonomy using three criteria: form factor, technology and purpose. The chapter describes the components of intelligent environments that are grouped into four layers (physical, communication, information and decision). A view of what has been done and what the field can offer has been presented; describing several applications and case studies, which range from smart homes to smart laboratories, and include smart everyday objects, smart cars and smart offices. Controlled Vocabulary Terms ambient intelligence; smart phones
