THE ANALYSIS OF PARTIAL REGISTRATION-PLATE DATA
Mike J. Maher · Traffic engineering & control · 1985
Partial registration-plate matching is a commonly used technique in a variety of situations in traffic studies. The problem of spurious matches has been considered by Makowski and Sinha, Hauer and Shewey. It will be shown that the problem of estimating the number of genuine matches can be treated by the techniques of maximum likelihood and weighted least squares regression. Furthermore the latter method extends naturally to the case in which there are many observation points and it is desired to estimate a trip matrix from the information collected. The accuracy of the approach is assessed by the use of simulation tests in which a known traffic pattern is input. (Author/TRRL)
