Large packet switch and contention resolution device

A. Cisneros · International Symposium on Switching · 2005

We propose a way of combining several space division switching planes to build a larger switch with a total capacity which grows linearly with the number of switching planes. This can be made possible by resolving contention several times faster than the rate at which packets are switched through one plane. We couId for example combine eight 155 Mbit/sec IKXIK switching planes into a 1.24 Gbit/sec per input IKXIK switch, We propose a contention resolution scheme which can be implemented in current CMOS technology and can resolve contention for up to 16384 input lines in 2.33 psec. Contention can be resolved in shorter times for a proportionately smaller number Of inputs.
