JUMP-DP: A Software DSM System with Low-Latency Communication Support.

Benny Wang-Leung Cheung, Cho‐Li Wang, Kai Hwang · 2000

: In this paper, we introduce the JUMP-DP DSM system, which integrates two novel techniques to improve DSM performance: The migrating-home protocol, which adapts better to the memory access patterns of most DSM applications, is able to reduce the amount of data communicating among machines to maintain memory consistency; and the use of Socket-DP, a kernel module which provides lowlatency communication with an easy-to-use socket interface, is able to outperform BSD Sockets by at least 12.9% due to a reduction in the software protocol overhead in network communication. We implemented JUMP-DP on a cluster of 16 Pentium III 450MHz PCs, and a substantial performance improvement has been obtained for all applications. Keywords: migrating-home protocol, low-latency communication. 1 Introduction Software Distributed Shared Memory (DSM) is an attractive parallel programming paradigm on a cluster of PCs or workstations. It offers a shared memory abstraction over machines with physically distr...
