Weighted primary trait analysis for computer program evaluation

Lon Smith, José Luis Córdova · Journal of computing sciences in colleges · 2005

In this paper, we describe the rationale for and development of a weighted primary trait analysis tool for the evaluation of student programming assignments. Primary trait analysis, an effective evaluation tool used extensively in the liberal arts community, defines a number of specific criteria or traits to be evaluated along with specific measures of performance for each trait. Our work combines this approach with a weighting system that assigns relative weights to the various criteria. The model has been implemented in a spreadsheet and has been used successfully in grading programming assignments at various levels in our curriculum.
