Abstract This entry provides definitions and an overview of technologies used to enable voice and data communication in what is called the “last” or “first” mile of telecommunication networks. It considers the variety and suitability of these technologies particularly for countries and regions in the global South, offering examples of the approaches that are mobilized from the “bottom up” by local community groups of telecommunication service users.
