A study on the adoption of grid and cloud computing models: an educational perspective
Serena Pastore · IEEE International Conference on Cloud Computing Technology and Science · 2014
Grid and cloud computing are two models of distributed computing systems that are based on the same objective of sharing heterogeneous computational resources in a transparent way for the end users. However they manifest some similarities and differences that contribute to have different adoption for the organizations. In Europe grid computing have emerged thanks to several European funding research projects and demonstrators which gave rise to the creation of a European grid infrastructure (EGI). Cloud computing is exploded as a dynamic and scalable computing and storage platform that is more close to the demands and needs of users since it seems much more easy to adopt and use thanks to the wide commercial offerings. Since the two models seem to converge rather than competing, this paper analyzes the two infrastructures to evaluate their intensive use in an educational environment, focusing on the benefits and issues related to their use
