Future Trends in Telecommunications Software Technologies

Fotis G. Chatzipapadopoulos, Menelaos K. Perdikeas, Iakovos S. Venieris · 2001

Chapter two explores the technical and market oriented reasons that have underpinned the differences between data and communications networks. The examination is performed at an abstract level so that the reader is not overwhelmed by jargon and that common features and differences may be perceived. Also, the concept and role of services is examined in each network type and trends are discerned concerning the direction to which telecoms and datacoms are heading taking into account convergence and architectures for providing QoS in internets using signaling-like protocols. The discussion in this chapter references concrete technologies only as a way to exemplify abstract concepts and paradigms so the chapter is suitable for people with little technical background as well.
