System configuration of facial identification based on isodensity maps

H. Ono, Osamu Nakamura · 2006

To construct a facial authentication system, a user friendly interface must be examined. The properties which the, system should have are as follows: (1) the processing system must be constructed based on object oriented software. To obtain this system, each process must be, divided into several groups (each group called an object). (2) To make it easy to operate the computer system, a graphical user interface which has been specifically designed, must be adopted. (3) High flexibility for the expansion of the system is required. Since processing algorithms are being improved on a daily basis. It is necessary to design a system whose expansion capabilities are highly flexible. We have studied facial, recognition systems for more than 20 years. These systems consists of the following four stages: (1) image, input/storage system - in order to account for the intricate particulars of any one face, it is necessary input together facial data from various angles, therefore, 25 facial images are acquired by a charge-coupled device (CCD) camera, with, a planar light source as the lighting condition and stored as registered images. (2) Preprocessing - in this stage, the facial area is isolated from a background. When the background is very complicated in image, the extraction process of the face may be very difficult and takes a lot of time. (3) matching - this stage is divided into two processes, namely, template matching and fine matching. In our conventional system, however, there are some problems in terms of system configuration such as redundancy, operational inconvenience, processing time and so on. In this paper, a prototype of the personal identification system accompanied with a user friendly interface described above, is presented and the performance of the proposed system is also discussed.
