The failure of the Fourier transform in nonlinear spectroscopy

We show that, in nonlinear spectroscopy, the time‐domain response and frequency‐domain susceptibility are not related by an n‐dimensional Fourier transform. This result is a consequence of the noncommutativity of different‐time operators in semiclassical nonlinear‐optical perturbation theory.
