The Cognitive Radio
Sudharman K. Jayaweera · 2014
A cognitive radio is an intelligent software-defined radio (SDR) that not only constitutes attributes of intelligence but also the cognitive abilities that enable self-learning and self-awareness. The purpose of self-awareness required in a cognitive radio is to ensure that the radio has the ability to autonomously response to its RF environment and user needs given its internal state. A cognitive radio must possess the following attributes such as self-management, self-learning, and self-reconfigurability. Architecturally, a cognitive radio is an SDR platform with a cognitive engine that controls it. An ideal cognitive radio will presume an ideal SDR platform as its host. An ideal cognitive radio monitors how successfully its performance objectives were met by operating according to its selected optimal mode. Advanced and sophisticated signal processing algorithms are quite commonplace in almost all modern wireless communications systems.
