Mobile Telephone Networks

Martin P. Clark · 2001

This chapter covers the world of mobile telephone networks, including terrestrial ‘cellular radio’ networks and GSM (Global System for Mobile communication) as well as maritime and aeronautical telephone services. It explains the architecture of mobile networks, describing the ‘cellular’ nature of the base station coverage areas. It goes on to describe the ‘home’ and ‘visiting location register’ technology which makes ‘roaming’ of end-user stations between different base stations possible.
