Physical Content Distribution Versus Delivery from the Cloud
Thomas Coughlin · 2015
Abstract This article explores the characteristics and trends of the major storage devices used in consumer electronics as well as content delivery (see Compression and Storage File Formats). It then explores digital content trends in terms of both storage capacity and bandwidth as a function of resolution and depth (such as stereoscopic content or artificial reality). These trends include the influence and potential uses of user‐generated content (UGC) as well as the interaction of commercial content and UGC and the impact that this has on content delivery solutions. The future of physical content delivery in terms of distribution media type is explored (see Blue‐Ray versus Internet Movies). Finally, projections of the overall use of physical distribution media versus electronic distribution media as a function of resolution and image depth as well as evolving consumer expectations of products and services are discussed.
