Described in this paper is an implementation of a true incremental compiler designed and executed at the Stanford Computation Center Real-Time Facility, located at the Stanford University Medical School. The compiler translates a powerful subset of PL/1 into machine language for use in a timesharing system. The problems of efficiency versus flexibility are discussed, and some examples of the techniques used to cope with problems presented by the language and the environment are detailed.
