Protocol Design Concepts, TCP/IP, and the Network Layer

Shivkumar Kalyanaraman, Biplab Sikdar · 2003

This chapter describes the concept of layering in the Internet protocol stack, and the position and role of the IP layer in relation to the other layers, e.g., TCP, ATM, link layer, and the physical layer from the viewpoint of end-to-end bit transfer. The chapter specifically focuses on TCP/IP, IP over ATM, IP switching, MPLS and Internet QoS architectures. The chapter concludes with the observation that the intelligent optical networking functions can be placed inside the Internet provided it offers a favorable economic tradeoff in achieving the basic goal of the Internet which is end-to-end connectivity.
