Separable complex verbs in Dutch: A case of periphrastic word formation

Separable complex verbs (SCVs) also called VDPHQNRSSHOLQJHQ ’combinations’ in Dutch grammars are combinations of a verb and some other word which have both word-like properties and properties of a combination of words (Booij 1990). Thus, they pose the important theoretical question of how to draw the boundaries between morphology and syntax, and they have received a lot of attention in the morphological literature. The following sentences illustrate the use of SCVs, both with SOV word order (embedded clauses) and with SVO word order (main clauses):
