Testing in the 'small'

Much of software is designed to verify and validate large software systems. White-box, black-box, unit, and integration [1,2,3] are established mechanisms for software also at a larger scale. In this paper, we present a methodology to introduce the CS1 student to small programs, hence, testing in the 'small'.The technique involves gradually introducing CS1 students to the notion of program testing. We devised a three-phase approach where we progress from clear, concise instructions to more vague and less precise test case selection guidelines. The technique has been successfully implemented and provides CS1 educators a technique to manage program testing.
