Computerized Learner Supports in Pre-Logo Programming Environments

Rina Cohen · Journal of Research on Computing in Education · 1990

This paper is based on an ongoing project concerned with the development of pre-Logo microworlds that form mathematically rich, problem solving environments for young children. A recent evaluation study has brought to light some difficulties inherent in the classroom implementation of such open-ended computer environments. In particular, a number of children experienced problems, entertained misconceptions, or used inefficient or “buggy” strategies. The classroom teachers were unable to provide sufficient tutorial support to their students due to time constraints and high teacher-student ratios. These observations have led to a new phase of the project, in which the microworld environment is being redesigned and enhanced with various learner support features. The new environment includes a menu-driven user interface especially designed for young children, a graphics-oriented Help utility, computerized measurement tools, and a record and playback feature. Fieldtesting of the enhanced microworlds has demonstrated that the newly added learner support features facilitated learning and helped eliminate most of the children’s problems.
