Making DBMS relevant to non-majors

Carol L. Blinkerd, Chandrika Rao · Journal of computing sciences in colleges · 2005

Teaching service classes is always a challenge. Teaching a computer science course as a service course magnifies this challenge. This paper discusses the challenges of teaching a database management systems (DBMS) course to students whose major is geomatics (a part of Geographical Information Sciences - GIS). Furthermore, it presents possible solutions that the faculty can implement to ensure a successful course. Although the paper focuses upon a DBMS course for geomatics majors, the challenges and solutions can be generalized to other computer science courses taught to non-majors.
