Hello, worlds: an introduction to mobile application development for IOS and Android

Roberta Anderson, Paul V. Gestwicki · Journal of computing sciences in colleges · 2011

The popularity and proliferation of mobile applications is undeniable, and the tools are available for undergraduates to explore mobile application development within the curriculum. In a sense, mobile application development is like any other kind of software development: there are platform-specific languages, tools, and constraints that one must learn in order to create high-quality products. This tutorial is designed to help instructors make that important first step into mobile application development. The presenters will demonstrate all of the required steps to configure a development environment, including operating system, integrated development environment, and mobile device. We will show iOS configuration for iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch platforms as well as Eclipse configuration for Android development. Following the demonstrations, we will lead a roundtable discussion of the pros and cons of the two platforms, focusing specifically on their integration with the undergraduate Computer Science learning experience.
