SMART INTERSECTIONS USING DS/SS CDMA VEHICLE - ROAD COMMUNICATION

Lachlan B. Michael, Masao Nakagawa · 1998

The use of vehicle-road communication (VRC) and inter-vehicle communication (IVC) have been proposed when vehicles are traveling on highways to improve safety and increase the smooth flow of traffic. However, the use of this equipment in specialized lanes only on highways is near-sighted. With thought given to the initial implementation, the same equipment can easily be used at intersections on ordinary roads, to improve traffic flow and safety. In this paper we propose a DS/SS VRC system and explain how it can be used for both IVC and VRC. We show that it has the potential to improve safety and traffic flow at intersections, especially in highly variable traffic situations.
