Topology and congestion invariant in global internet-scale networks

Abstract—The very large telecommunications network, like the Internet, cannot be studied using simulation due to the amount of software/hardware resources required. To simulate large net-works, a possible approach is to use abstractions on the networks’ behaviors. These abstractions can improve the efficiency of the simulator without changing the fundamental character of the network’s dynamics. We are developing a simulator that can be run on a parallel computer, which is going to be used in search of networks ’ scale–invariants. They are invariants in the network’s topology, traffic and also in the interaction between the topology and the traffic. Our starting point is to understand how the onset of congestion (dynamical property) depends on the network’s connectivity (topological property). It has been shown in regular networks that onset of congestion and topology are related, but the result needs to be expanded to general topologies with different traffic characteristics. I.
