OPERATORS SHOULD ADOPT PRACTICAL NOT HI-TECH SOLUTIONS

Stephen Bennett · 2002

Advances in information technology have been embraced by the rail industry, but the innovations are not always effective. Electronic information boards at mainline stations do not always work and the information displayed can be inaccurate. Customers want real-time information that is reliable. LCD screens are sometimes too small for the amount of information displayed or are placed at locations where they block access. On-board television screen information has seen good progress, but it is expensive to install such systems during train refurbishment programmes. A joint project is being conducted by Railtrack and the Association of Train Operating Companies in the UK to improve passenger information. A system using the Avantix Traveller and Avantix Mobile technology are being trialled on the Gatwick Express service.
