Musical Genre, Similarity, and Mood

Alexander Lerch · 2012

The automatic recognition of the musical genre or the musical style from an audio signal is one of the oldest subjects of ACA and can be regarded as one of the key areas leading to today's research field MIR. This chapter covers musical genre classification, music similarity measures, mood classification as well as instrument recognition. All these systems have in common that they try to represent a property (such as the genre) of the audio signal as either a feature vector or a (time-) series of feature vectors; these feature vectors are then used either for classification or for a distance measure to retrieve the required result. Controlled Vocabulary Terms audio signal processing; music
