A Comparison of the Guides to Abstracting and Indexing Services Provided by Katz, Chicorel, and Ulrich.

Cynthia Swenk, Wendy Robinson · 1978

Ulrich's International Periodicals Direc tory,1 Katz's Magazines for Libraries,2 and Chicorel Index to Abstracting and In dexing Services3 are widely used tools for discovering abstracting and indexing serv ices for social science periodicals. Since acquisition and selection of such peri odicals are partially determined by this in formation, we became interested in study ing how accurate these three sources are in their reporting of abstracting and index ing services. In particular we were in terested in investigating whether or not the tool (1) excluded sources in which the primary journal was actually indexed and/or (2) included sources in which the primary journal was not indexed. We also wanted to discover how accurate the pri mary journals were in reporting which abstracting and indexing services indexed them and if, indeed, they made this infor mation available to the user.
