Overview of Content Distribution Networks

Dinesh Chandra Verma · 2002

Chapter 1 provides an overview of content distribution networks (CDNs) and compares CDNs to other approaches for managing the performance of web-based applications. The chapter starts with a description of factors that impact performance of networked applications. Network capacity planning and quality of service schemes, including reservation schemes and service differentiation schemes, are discussed. The CDN solution uses different sites to provide a networked application. This chapter examines the applicability of CDNs in different contexts, specifically their use by businesses (e.g., to support enterprise intranets), networking services providers, and third-party CDN services providers. A basic architecture for CDNs is proposed and the components that make up a CDN are identified.
