This chapter introduces basic concepts related to the management of cloud computing. This is followed by a discussion on the types of applications that can be allocated to cloud resources, as well as formalization of the cloud system and a description of the problems of both application scheduling and virtual machine (VM) allocation. Cloud computing can be classified according to access policy. Cloud types include: public cloud, private cloud and hybrid cloud. VM allocation is of paramount importance for the best utilization of physical machines. This allocation must comply with the provider objectives as well as fulfilling quality of service (QoS) requirements specified in the service-level agreements (SLAs). Cloud computing resource management can be partially handled by adapting techniques developed for other distributed systems such as grids and clusters. The chapter discusses some of the challenges and perspectives during cloud computing management for the next few years.
