Electronic Voting and Computer Security
Stéphan Brunessaux · 2013
Works on electronic voting go back to the late 1990s, thanks to a strong impetus given by the European Commission through its research program for the Information Society Technologies (IST). The advances in information and communication technologies (ICT), and in particular in security techniques, have rapidly led politicians and engineers specializing in software development to promote electronic voting under a certain number of expectations. The authentication of the voter is a crucial point when using an Internet voting system. The absence of a polling station with a person in charge of verifying the identity of the voter requires the use of computer authentication. Like any computer program, an Internet voting system is subject to different threats that can be divided into two main categories accidental threats and computer abuse. This chapter briefly summarizes the different technical approaches has been developed to set up a secure voting protocol. Controlled Vocabulary Terms computer security; government data processing
