Taking a recent interview with Noam Chomsky about the relationship between theoretical and descriptive linguistics as its starting point, this paper discusses the qualitative uses corpus linguists ought to make of attested language data, and how new corpus exploitation software like ICECUP (incorporating Fuzzy Tree Fragments) can be instrumental in such research.
