A Solar Ephemeris for use with programmable calculators

G. G. Bennett · Australian Surveyor · 1980

An approximate algorithm for calculating the sun's co-ordinates to an accuracy that is suitable for most surveying applications is described. The algorithm is sufficiently compact such that, with modern hand-held programmable calculators, it can be incorporated as a sub-routine of main-line programmes for the reduction of sun observations for azimuth made by the altitude or time methods. It is intended that the algorithm be used primarily for the reduction of observations made from now up to the end of this century. However, the reduction of observations made at epochs even a century removed from the present will not be seriously affected by the approximations taken. An example, worked in detail, is included for the purpose of illustration.
