Enhancing Van Hiele’s level of geometric understanding using geometer’s sketchpad

Introduction The study of geometry has been recognized as a way for students to master basic skills such as analysis, comparison, and generalization and cognitive skills in order to gain better understanding of the world (Erdogan, Akkaya, & Celebi Akkaya, 2009). The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (2000) stressed that mathematical instruction should focus on conceptual understanding so that the students can apply the knowledge learned in various situations. In schools, however, students spend a lot of time listening to teachers’ explanations without fully developing their own geometrical concepts.
