Object‐Oriented, Component‐Based, Agent‐Oriented and Service‐Oriented Paradigms in Software Architectures

Abdelkrim Amirat, Anthony Hock‐Koon, Mourad Chabane Oussalah · 2014

This chapter clarifies the boundaries between the paradigms by proposing a conceptual comparative framework based on two quantitative and qualitative approaches. It focuses on four key paradigms in the field of software development, namely object-oriented software engineering (OOSE), component-based software engineering (CBSE), agent-oriented software engineering (AOSE) and service-oriented software engineering (SOSE). A clear specification of the conceptual differences between these paradigms and their contribution to the description of software architectures are also described in detail. The qualitative dimension defines eight properties: explicit architecture, communication abstraction, expressive power, loosely coupling, evolution capacity, owner's responsibility, concurrency and distribution, which group the elements that influence the quality of software architecture. Finally, the qualitative dimension allows users to express their own quality factors using the eight selected quality criteria.
