Choosing Architectures for Expert Systems.

Kline,Paul J., Steven Dolins · Defense Technical Information Center (DTIC) · 1985

The goal of this research was to develop design guidelines for expert systems. These guidelines relate problem characteristics to appropriate artificial intelligence (AI) implementation techniques. They were developed by (1) collecting claims about the appropriate use of techniques from the published literature on expert systems, (2) circulating these draft guidelines among experienced expert systems builders for their comments and additions, and (3) revising the draft guidelines in response to these comments. This report includes the resulting 47 guidelines along with excerpts from the published literature that justify and support each guideline. The report also contains descriptions of 44 problems readers can be expected to encounter if they decide to use some of the AI techniques that are recommended. A glossary that defines 53 of the AI techniques and an index are also included. Keywords: Knowledge representation; Reasoning; and Problem solving. (Author)
