An evalution of the efficacy of seminars in retaining and recruiting computer science majors

Paul D. Wiedemeier, José Luis Córdova, Lon Smith, Kimberly Taylor · Journal of computing sciences in colleges · 2007

It is well documented that the number of undergraduate students majoring in computer science at United States colleges and universities has declined in recent years [3, 7]. This situation is of great concern within the computing profession and is often a discussion topic at professional computing conferences, including the annual Consortium for Computing Sciences in Colleges Mid-South regional conference. In this paper, we identify from literature several reasons cited for the decline in the number of computer science majors, list literature proposed solutions, hypothesize that computer science seminars are part of the solution, and present results obtained from student surveys that conclude otherwise.
