An RLC layer is connected to a lower MAC layer via logical channels. Each logical channel transports different types of traffic, and the name of the logical channel reflects the characteristic of the traffic it transport. RLC functions are performed by an RLC entity. The RLC entity is used for only one radio bearer. However, a bidirectional radio bearer can have two RLC entities, in which case two UM RLC entities with different directions are used for the radio bearer. This chapter gives an overview of the RLC functions such as framing, reordering, automatic repeat request (ARQ) operation, window operation, SDU discard and RLC re-establishment depending on the RLC operating mode. The RLC operating modes are transparent Mode (TM), unacknowledged mode (UM) and acknowledged Mode (AM). Controlled Vocabulary Terms automatic repeat request; radio links
