Extended Boolean Information Retrieval in Terms of Fuzzy Inclusion

Gloria Bordogna, Patrick Bosc, Gabriella Pasi · Studies in fuzziness and soft computing · 2000

In this contribution an analysis of the extended Boolean information retrieval models will be presented in the unique formal framework of fuzzy set theory. These models share the characteristics of numeric weights in both document representation and queries: nevertheless, they differ in the semantics adopted for query weights. The main idea of this contribution is to define the retrieval mechanism of such retrieval models in terms of the fuzzy inclusion. This approach derives from the notion of division of fuzzy relations in the framework of Data Base Management Systems. The expected outcome of the work is a comparison of the retrieval models and a better understanding of their retrieval mechanisms.
