Communication and Synchronization Utilities

Maria Toeroe, Sayandeb Saha · 2012

This chapter presents the three most frequently used utility services. It emphasis is on what they do, what problems they solve, and how applications can use them to solve their particular availability requirements rather than discussing how they are implemented in the middleware. They allow different ways of communication between application processes among others for the purpose of synchronizing their states when collaborating in the provisioning and protection of some services. These services are the Event service (EVT), the Message service (MSG), and the Checkpoint service (CKPT). All three services offer solutions that decouple the communicating parties that need to share some information. For the purpose of this communication the parties synchronize through the respective service entities, the names of which are the minimum required shared knowledge among the involved parties. Controlled Vocabulary Terms synchronisation
