Switched Multi‐megabit Data Service (SMDS)

John Atkins, Mark Norris · 2001

Aimed primarily at wide area LAN interconnection, SMDS is a connectionless high-speed packet data service with the capability to support virtual private networking for data. It is considered by many to be the first truly broadband wide area service of all, and represents real co-operation between the IT world (which developed the DQDB MAN protocol) and the telecommunications world. The description of SMDS is made in two ‘passes’. First an introduction designed for easy understanding, but lacking the detail that some readers want. Then in more detail for the demanding reader. Anyone needing more detail than this is clearly serious about it, and should really get to grips with the source documents identified.
