Metrology of Internet Networks

Nicolas Larrieu, Philippe Owezarski · 2013

The Internet is changing in terms of its uses. From a monoservice network to transport binary or textual files 20 years ago, the Internet must today be a multiservice network for the transport of diverse and various data, such as audio and video. This chapter introduces the problems associated with the implementation of global measurements in computer networks such as the Internet. It shows the different active and passive measurement techniques, their needs, qualities and faults. Then, from measurements or observations on the traffic, the chapter highlights the causes of the current limitations of traffic growth, thus showing the importance of metrology for research and network engineering. The chapter concludes by listing a number of network domains that derive large profits from using metrology. Controlled Vocabulary Terms computer networks
