Modeling Teaching with a Computer-Based Concordancer in a TESL Preservice Teacher Education Program

Siowck-Lee Gan · Journal of Computing in Teacher Education · 1996

AbstractThe analysis of natural texts provides the basis for which words used in different contexts can be studied. Computer concordancing software, which makes such a task not only viable but also fast, has come to be regarded as a useful tool for teaching vocabulary skills. This article describes an attempt to model teaching with a computer-based concordancer in a TESL preservice teacher education program. A two-stage pretest-posttest experimental design was set up with the dual purposes of (a) providing students with the opportunity to experience computer-assisted instruction (CAI), as well as the conventional method of teaching vocabulary skills, and (b) collecting empirical data to compare the effectiveness of computer-based concordancing exercises and the conventional instructional approach in the teaching of vocabulary skills.
