Fiber Optic Link Design for an Open-Ocean Shallow-Water Tracking Range.

David Norman Nicholson, John P. Powers · Defense Technical Information Center (DTIC) · 1980

This thesis is an investigation into the feasibility of using fiber optics in a shallow-water tracking range at the Naval Undersea Warfare Engineering Station. After a review of the requirements and constraints imposed on the system, a study of optical fiber cables is presented. The engineering parameters for a fiber optic system were reviewed and sample calculations made based on commercially available optical components. The signal formats available for transmission over a fiber optic system were also reviewed. A description of the electronics used to construct one of the possible signal formats and a spread spectrum version of that signal are provided. (Author)
