The architecture of a large capacity packet switch

A significant advance came with the introduction of the DPN Data Networking System line in 1985. This paper describes the architecture of the largest packet switch in the DPN product line, the DPN-100/500 switch. Architecture objectives of this switch included very large throughput and capacity, high reliability, and full backward compatibility with existing DPN networks. This switch can support 30,000 subscriber lines with a throughput of 30,000 data packets per second.
